Join us on Sunday for a turtle release!

You are invited to join the National Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue team this weekend as we release several rehabilitated sea turtles back to their natural environment.

Turtle Release June 2010

The release is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday, June 26, at Point Lookout State Park in Scotland, MD. The turtles will be released at the swimming beach:

These Kemp’s ridley sea turtles stranded on the coast of New England and came to us in December, suffering from cold stunning—the sea turtle equivalent of hypothermia. While in long-term rehab, the turtles have received daily care including feeding, medical treatments, and environmental enrichment to stimulate their natural instincts. Kemp’s ridleys are the most endangered of all the sea turtle species, and we believe that every turtle counts!

Several turtles will be outfitted with a small satellite transmitter that will allow us to track the location and speed of the turtles. These tags help researchers learn more about sea turtle migration and travel patterns. After the release, you can follow the turtles’ progress at

We hope you’ll join us in wishing the turtles farewell and safe travels!

For directions to the park, visit the park’s website (normal park entrance fees apply).

Nowadays, sea creatures like sea turtles are on the list of endangered species. Let’s help in preserving their species.
