Animal Updates – July 18

Between our Baltimore and Washington, DC, venues, more than 17,500 animals representing 900 species call the National Aquarium home. There are constant changes, additions, and more going on behind the scenes that our guests may not notice during their visit. We want to share these fun updates with our community so we’re bringing them to you in our weekly Animal Update posts!

We have a spotted spiny lobster in our Sensing exhibit!

Named for the cream spots found all over it’s body, the spotted spiny lobster can be found in the warm waters of the Atlantic.

These reef-dwellers spend most of their time hidden, but come out at night to feed on smaller crustaceans and fish.

Did you know? Lobsters in cooler waters are generally larger in size than those in warmer waters. This species, which can be found throughout the Caribbean, only grows to be about 8 inches long.

Habitat Adjustment for Lobsters, Toby and Larry!

Last year, our Washington, DC venue welcomed two rare, brightly-colored lobsters into their collection. Toby, a blue lobster found off the Maryland coast, resides in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuaries exhibit.

Like most of his species, Toby likes to spend his time nestled under rock formations. In the wild, this behavior helps protect the lobster from possible predators.

This week, staff dove in this exhibit to create similar “habitat spots” for our second lobster, Larry, a bright orange lobster donated to the Aquarium by a local market. Lobsters can be quite territorial, so to prevent any aggression between our two, we’ve provided them each their own space within the habitat! Visitors will be able to see Larry on exhibit in the next few weeks!

The National Aquarium’s Fresh Thoughts sustainable seafood dining series is back this fall, with events at both our Baltimore and Washington, DC, venues. About the Guest Chefs From Fleet Street Kitchen
A Baltimore native, graduate of the Baltimore Culinary Institute, and veteran of several of the city’s most highly regarded restaurants, Chef Chris Becker maintains deep relationships with local farmers, foragers, and fishermen. He was named one of the top “Chefs to Watch” by Baltimore Magazine.

Born and raised in New York City, Chef Omar Semidey developed a passion for food and cooking that led him to pursue a career in the culinary arts. Omar attended the French Culinary Institute in New York City. After working with Chef Becker at The Wine Market, he rejoins him at Fleet Street Kitchen, with the goal of developing and executing an exciting, high-quality, and seasonally inspired menu.

Baby Spiny-Tailed Monitors

On Tuesday, baby spiny-tailed monitors hatched in our Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes exhibit backup area!

These babies will stay in our backup area in the care of our staff. Although our guests won’t be able to see the young, you can see their parents in the front.


Toby is now on exhibit!

Just in time for Independence Day, Toby, the rare blue lobster found off the coast of Maryland last month, went on exhibit in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuaries exhibit at National Aquarium, Washington, DC, this past Tuesday.

Toby’s peculiar blue hue is said to be a 1-in-2-million exception to the reddish-brown shade of most lobsters. This unique color is a genetic variation that is caused by the lobster producing an excessive amount of a particular protein.

Meet McSchmick, the 16-pound lobster

In this corner weighing in at an impressive 16 pounds, meet McSchmick the Lobster!

The latest addition to National Aquarium, Washington, DC’s watery habitat was recently donated by McCormick & Schmick’s CEO and co-founder Doug Schmick.  The gigantic crustacean was pardoned by the restaurant when he reached an impressive size that became more desirable as a main attraction rather than a main course.

McSchmick currently resides in the Stellwagen Bank exhibit and spends most of his day opening and crushing clam shells with his mammoth claws.  After a period of isolation while he acclimates to his new surroundings, McSchmick will share his space with other new watery friends.

It is believed that the largest lobster ever recorded is 44 pounds! There are a few aquariums around the country that have 20-pound-plus lobsters. McSchmick could grow larger but our aquarists believe it will take a while to notice any growth.

Lobsters are 10-legged crustaceans closely related to shrimp and crabs. They are found in all of the world’s oceans, as well as brackish environments and even fresh water. This particular lobster is an American lobster, found in the North Atlantic. Lobsters typically molt at least once per year.  During this process, they shed their entire shell (or exoskeleton), leaving behind a replica of their bodies. They then hide for several days to a week or more while their new shell hardens.  Sometimes the lobsters even eat their molts, as it is a great source of calcium to help their shells harden.
