National Australia Day at the Aquarium!

Today is Australia Day, also known as Anniversary Day and Foundation Day, the official national day of Australia. aus-northernterCelebrated annually on 26 January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, the unfurling of the British flag at Sydney Cove and the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia. This day of celebration is very similar to America’s 4th of July. The National Aquarium celebrated with visitors in the Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes exhibit  this past weekend. Let’s take a look at a very special Australian animal that is now featured in the exhibit:

Irwin’s Turtle:

Irwin’s turtle was discovered by Steve Irwin and his father Bob on a camping trip in 1990. Because the turtle was new to them, it was photographed and sent to a turtle expert. After Steve Irwin’s death, the expert, John Cann, determined that the animal was indeed a new species. It was subsequently named Elseya irwini, with the common name, Irwin’s turtle. Ecologist Dr. Ivan Lawler suggests that the species, known only from the Burdekin and Bowen rivers in Australia, may be endangered or close to it. Lawler’s “best guess” is that there are only 4,000 to 5,000 in the wild.

Rehabilitated turtle prepares for release

In July, a loggerhead sea turtle came to the Aquarium through our Marine Animal Rescue Program (MARP), which takes in stranded marine animals with the goal of treating them back to health and releasing them back into their natural habitats.

Upon arrival the turtle was thin and her shell was covered with barnacles, mussels, and a thick growth of algae. To assess the turtle’s health, the Aquarium’s veterinary staff needed to evaluate the condition of her shell and check for any internal disease.

For this very special case, the vets called on the help of outside healthcare professionals. The radiology staff at John’s Hopkins Hospital stepped in to help. They volunteered their time and gave the Aquarium staff after hours access to their equipment, so the vets could get a good look at the turtles internal functions. Check out the video:

An exciting day!

National Aquarium staff and visitors gathered together in the Aquarium’s 4-D Immersion Theater to watch as Barack inaugurationObama was sworn in as our nation’s 44th President. With nearly all of the 225 seats were filled, the room was packed with excitement! Sounds of clapper and cheers spread through the theater as Barack Obama and Joe Biden were sworn into office.

The Baltimore Business Journal captured the celebration at many locations around town. Click here to read about it!

Crabcakes vs. BBQ Ribs

This Saturday as the Ravens face the Titans, a challenge is also on between the National Aquarium (located in ravens-titans1Baltimore) and the Tennessee Aquarium. Charles Myers, the National Aquarium’s director of visitor services and Gene Dwyer, the Tennessee Aquarium’s visitor services manager have made a friendly bet.

If the Ravens win, Charles and the National Aquarium staff will get to chow down on some famous Tennessee BBQ ribs, courtesy of the Tennessee Aquarium. And if the Titans win, Charles will deliver delicious Maryland crab cakes down south for Gene and his staff to enjoy.

This very same bet was made a few years ago and the game went to the Titans, leaving the Baltimore staff with empty stomachs. Charles and the National Aquarium are looking to equal playing field with this year’s bet. Game on!
