Enjoy, respect, and protect

Green Tip #2: June 8th is World Ocean Day. The world’s oceans are facing many threats including pollution, habitat damage, overfishing, coral reef bleaching, and species loss. Did you know that 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, whether it’s an ocean, river, lake, or pond? All of these bodies of water form an interconnected aquatic ecosystem. So what happens upriver affects the water and habitats downstream and onward to the sea.

This June, the National Aquarium in Baltimore will hold Beyond the Boardwalk, a series of events that celebrate ocean life and teach ways to enjoy, protect, and respect our local waterways and beaches. For event details, click here

In addition to attending events like these, there are plently of things you can do to help save our oceans. Here are five easy ways to get started:

  1. Keep trash contained so items don’t flow into rivers or streams. Reuse and recycle!
  2. Slow down to avoid injuring an aquatic animal with your boat.
  3. Ditch the car. Take a walk or ride a bike to nearby attractions.
  4. Get a different point of view. Take a kayak or canoe trip to see the beauty of the land from the water.
  5. Be seafood savvy. Pick up a Seafood Watch Guide and make the right choices when in the market for fish.
